Located in the very center of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake is more than just a scenic body of water. It is the cultural, historical, and spiritual heart of Vietnam’s capital, where locals gather to exercise, socialize, and escape the city’s bustling streets.
Surrounded by tree-lined promenades, historic landmarks, cafés, and colonial architecture, Hoan Kiem Lake is often the first place visitors explore when arriving in Hanoi. Whether you visit at sunrise, during the day, or after sunset, the lake offers a unique glimpse into the rhythm of local life.

The Legend of the Returned Sword
The name “Hoan Kiem” means “Lake of the Returned Sword” and originates from one of Vietnam’s most famous legends.
According to folklore, Emperor Le Loi received a magical sword from the Golden Turtle God to help drive out the Ming invaders in the 15th century. After achieving victory and restoring peace to the country, the emperor was boating on the lake when the Golden Turtle emerged and reclaimed the sword, returning it to the divine realm.
The story gave the lake its name and remains an important symbol of Vietnamese independence and national identity.

Ngoc Son Temple and The Huc Bridge
One of the most iconic sights in Hanoi is Ngoc Son Temple, located on a small island in the northern part of the lake.
Built in the 19th century, the temple is dedicated to several historical and spiritual figures, including General Tran Hung Dao, one of Vietnam’s greatest military heroes who successfully repelled Mongol invasions in the 13th century.
Visitors reach the temple by crossing the famous red-painted The Huc Bridge, meaning “Morning Sunlight Bridge.” The elegant wooden bridge has become one of Hanoi’s most photographed landmarks and offers beautiful views across the lake.
Inside the temple, visitors can admire ancient artifacts, traditional architecture, historical relics, and a preserved specimen of a giant soft-shell turtle once found in the lake.

Turtle Tower – Symbol of Hanoi
Standing gracefully on a small islet in the middle of the lake is Turtle Tower (Thap Rua), perhaps the most recognizable symbol of Hanoi.
Although visitors cannot enter the tower, it creates one of the city’s most iconic views, especially at night when it is beautifully illuminated. The tower serves as a lasting reminder of the legend that gave Hoan Kiem Lake its name.
