Itinerary

Day 1 HANOI – BA BE LAKE (L, D, 250km)

7.30-8.00 Pick up at your hotel in Hanoi for the journey to Ba Be Lake, a drive of approximately 150 miles (230 km). You will head north from the bustle of Hanoi and into the stunning landscape of rural Vietnam. During the journey you will have the chance to visit a Tay minority community. Have lunch at restaurant on the way.

On arrival at Ba Be National Park, take a boat trip along Nang River exploring the beautiful Ba Be Lake, the dramatic caves of Puong Grotto and Widow Island, a limestone islet steeped in local folklore and legend. After that, you take a short hike on the trail to the panorama viewpoint of the animal observation huts ranger station and to the harbour. Moreover, you will have a chance to kayak amidst the mystery sunset of the late afternoon before getting back to your homestay

You will also have time to visit the stilt houses of the Tay community in Coc Toc Village, where you will spend the night at homestay (Tay family).

Day 2 BA BE – BAN GIOC WATERFALL (B, L, D, 200km)

Breakfast at the homestay. Then depart for Cao Bang, one of Vietnam’s most northern provinces that borders China. Here you will have the chance to meet the Nung people in the village of Phuc Sen, a mountainous village famous for traditional blacksmith craft. Like the Tays, the Nungs largely live by farming the terraced rice paddies that you will see all around as you continue to Ban Gioc Waterfall, the stunning falls that span across the border between Vietnam and China. You will spend some time at your own leisure, relaxing and taking photos as you soak up the incredible surroundings of Vietnam’s most beautiful waterfall.

Heading back to Cao Bang town, on the way, we stop to visit the expansive 2,144 meter Nguom Ngao Cave to discover its brilliant stalactites.

Have dinner and overnight at a homestay of Nung’s village in Quang Uyen.

Day 3 CAO BANG – LANG SON – HANOI (B, L, 280km)

After breakfast we’ll kick the final day of the tour by continue your trip into the pass to Dong Dang, stopping to visit Mother’s Temple and Dong Khe – an important historical site where The Battle of Dong Khe was fought during the First Indochina War. In fact, this was the very first battle of the Indochina Wars, and the fighting here took place through September and October 1950, ending in a resounding victory for the Viet Minh.

Transferring to Lang Son for Lunch then driving in the direction of the Chinese border for about 3 hours, before reaching at Chi Lang Pass – a 20-km-long gorge created from a narrow valley between two mountains. This place occupies an important position in Vietnamese history, being the place of many victories against various Chinese invasions over the centuries and millennia, as far back as 981AD. As such it bears the reputation of Vietnam’s strongest citadel and bastion. Here you will have roughly an hour to walk around and explore the area around the Quy Mon Quan Gate, which translates as “The Gate of Monsters”, named for the many invasion forces that would spill through the pass over the course of history only to be beaten back by stalwart Vietnamese defenders.

End the tour in Hanoi around 18.00.
